Garden City Rules SW Kansas

24K CommonCensus Large map (picture)

What is that toothpaste green blob in western Kansas? Oh look, it is Garden City that is sited as an influence on the surrounding area. It is the smallest city to have an influence blob in America, it just happens that Garden in far enough away from other larger cities that it can make its own influence. Hurray for Garden City!

Yesterday we all (same as the previous 'we all' minus Maria) traveled up to Omaha to play an exhibition game for hockey. We played alright as a team, and we defiantly are better than last year, which is a good thing. After the game we went to Outback to eat dinner with some of Aaron's family that came down to watch the game. We ended up staying at Outback for a long time (more than two hours) just talking about stuff. It was a good trip although it renewed my dislike for the state of Nebraska... nice people, but very bad roads.

After the game we all (me, Cole, Jenette, Chris, Maria, Aaron, Amber, and Nicoles mom) went to Old Chicago. The wait took along time, but it was good, so it is was worth the wait.

On Saturday we went to the K-State/ CU game. We played pretty well and we lost in the last minute or so of the game. Ah well. (If you look on top of the stadium you can see Willie up there.)

The mystery of the eye

MSNBC sez:

While watching NBC2 coverage of Hurricane Wilma about two dozen residents called the station reporting an unusual sighting. While watching a Doppler loop of Hurricane Wilma coming ashore, a number two appeared in the eye of the storm.
In going back through the recorded Doppler loop, we found exactly what viewers were talking about.

Last discing of the year.

This evening we went out to the campus to play one last round of disc golf before it gets too cold/the sun sets too early. We had a grand old time playing, we didn't keep score and by the time we finished it was pretty dark outside. Some strange things happened while we played today which brings me to a riddle.

How do you lose something but still know exactly where it is?

Jenette's answer: When you throw a disc into a campus light fixture.

We have hit them many times, but who would have guessed that Jenette had the muscle to actually get hers to break the light?

The other strange thing from today’s game is that i broke my disc... i threw it into a tree in it cracked pretty good... it still flies fine though, so i will still use it.

But yeah, we had a good time playing today. ^_^

Brother travels from Thailand to help with kidney transplant

gctelegram.com (article)

The Garden City Telegram ran a story about Somary's mom Wednesday about her search for a kidney. I really hope that it turns out ok for her mom. It is a very brave thing for her mom's brother to come over here to see if indeed he can donate his kidney, because *at best* he will lose a kidney, as in, that is the best outcome of him coming over... that is kinda scary to think about. Anyways, here is a chunk from the article:

A brother's love for his sister was so great that he flew halfway around the world to save her life.
Panya Dukham, Thailand, had never been on a plane before, or to the U.S., but this was an emergency.
His sister, Morn Vilaysing, Garden City, has renal kidney failure and needs a kidney transplant. Her husband, Roger, wasn't a match and Morn didn't want to ask her children.
So she turned to her siblings, all of which live in Thailand.

I was inspired to throw together some artwork for MAD tonight. It came out ok.

Architect reveals redevelopment options

PocketMod: The Free Disposable Personal Organizer

PocketMod (site)

PocketMod is a nifty web program that you can use to make pocket organizers. What is neat is the range of things that you can print up on the notebook, such as calendars, grids, tic-tac-tow boards, etc... The best thing is that each organizer is made from just one piece of paper.

Kamau Kambon

WorldNetDaily: Professor (edited article)

A visiting professor at North Carolina State University says the solution to the problems faced by many whites is the extermination of "black people off the face of the planet."
Kamau Kambon told the audience blacks [...] are monitoring our people to try to prevent the one person from coming up with the one idea. And the one idea is, how we are going to exterminate black people, because that in my estimation is the only conclusion I have come to. We have to exterminate black people off the face of the planet to solve this problem."
The Carolina Journal said Kambon's remarks received slight applause in the room, to which he responded, "I don't care whether you clap or not, but I'm saying to you that we need to solve this problem because they are going to kill us."

This is an outrage! How can a person over two weeks ago have a speech like this and no-one know about it, especially since it was at such a prestigious place (i.e. a college). What is even sicker is that people actually clapped after he said that, *CLAPED*!!!!
It is insane that someone can be so hateful and not be reprimanded. I just don’t get it.
Oh wait, wait, wait, switch black to white and white to black in the article, I got those mixed up.
Never mind... it is OK for him to say that.
Racist.

Bobby T'sday

Today went over pretty good with the... thing... that tells me if the day goes good... (Does a toenail do that?)

Anyways, it was just a normal Tuesday with the added bonus of getting to school early, and a sandwich. Which is a good bonus, as far as bonuses go.

A squirrel did fall from quite some distance when i was in the consulting lab today, he looked to be ok after the fall, but he was scampering around kinda sporadically. He probably wasn't all with it...

Well, soon i will be off to conquer the world through trivia... well, trivia and tacos.

Well, we are back from Wichita, Nicole’s aunt was down, so after the K-State's football game on Saturday we headed south. We had a good time, and if vimeo works I'll get a video up.

I played around with Illustrator for a couple of minutes and made a PIFF logo:

does that not say football and pirates at the same time?

Like big spiders?

eBay: Inflatable Spider Mascot 40 feet tall

This is from the Tarantulas. They only got to use it once, which is too bad, because it would be very cool to see it in real life. Look at the background of the picture for reference on the size of it, it's huge!

CommonCensus

CommonCensus Map Project (site)

This is my new favorite website. It gets user input to find spheres of influence for sports teams, and for major urban areas. It has confirmed what I had thought though, right about where Garden City is (actually closer to Dodge) is the boundary between Broncos, Chiefs, and Cowboys fans. And it was evident growing up there. I haven’t looked at the NHL map yet, but I bet the Avs own about half of the US.

This site is defiantly worth a checking out, especially if your name is Lance.

Today was a very nice day outside. All cloudy and cool, and finally some of our trees are turning colors. Fun fun.

NHL Academy

Amber showed me a spiffy new way to get into the NHL, called the NHL Academy. All you have to do is complete the course and a team will call you soon afterwards. And even if you don't want to play professional hockey, I hear there are monkey robots included in the deal to carry your stuff around... so it's at least worth it for that.

Taking the permission society seriously

Stay Free! Daily (blargticle)

Are you planning to sing "Happy Birthday To You" (c) to anyone soon? Maybe you should ask for permission first, like this guy:

Dear ASCAP,

The copyright status of "Happy Birthday To You" and the law related to public performances of copyrighted works have recently been brought to my attention. I would therefore like to request permission in advance to sing "Happy Birthday" to my father at Frenchy's Original Cafe in Clearwater, Florida, on October 8, at approximately 1 pm.

My father will be turning 75 on this day and will probably be ordering the Seafood Gumbo and Fried Grouper. The rest of the party will include Charles Star, my brothers Peter and Paul, their spouses Karla and Cindee, and my mother Lynn. Five of us will be singing while my brothers merely mouth the words and smile. We expect there to be approximately 50 disinterested witnesses.

I realize this is short notice but we only recently settled the details. If there is a charge for the privilege of singing in this instance, please let me know. And, if there is, please specify whether or not the cost can be reduced by moving to another location.

I look forward to your prompt reply.

:), it would be great to get a response where they would want money to sing it, and then hang out at the restaurant and wait for people to sing it and then collect money from them, and send it to the copyright holder, complete with pictures of you doing it.

Ps. I don't like the copyright laws as they stand....

Long Island principal cancels prom

CNN.com (article)

Tired of his students treating prom like a drunken orgy night, the Principal of a Catholic School wrote a letter to the parents of the students.

"It is not primarily the sex/booze/drugs that surround this event, as problematic as they might be; it is rather the flaunting of affluence, assuming exaggerated expenses, a pursuit of vanity for vanity's sake -- in a word, financial decadence," Hoagland said, fed up with what he called the "bacchanalian aspects."
"Each year it gets worse -- becomes more exaggerated, more expensive, more emotionally traumatic," he said.
"We are withdrawing from the battle and allowing the parents full responsibility. [Kellenberg] is willing to sponsor a prom, but not an orgy."

Haha, I am glad that somebody somewhere is willing to stand up and say that. I believe the "popular" culture is spinning out of control these days in schools, mainly because each year they try to out do the year before it.

JibJab's legal threats over the use of 9 seconds of their video

Boing Boing (blargticle)

Jim sez, "WFMU's 'Beware of the Blog' has an entry up about JibJab's hypocrisy: although they, with help from the EFF, took shelter in the First Ammendment to defend themselves from a suit over their use of 'This Land is Your Land', they're now doing the exact same thing to a website that uses 9 non-contiguous seconds of their work in another project. I guess things are different when you can afford lawyers."

The good news is that JibJab was able to use a full copyrighted song, for commercial profit, and not have to pay to use it...
The bad news is that the JibJab guys are retards.

I second that.

Michelle posted about a couple of bands, one of them is Seasons, they are pretty good. If you are in the mood for some mellow music check them out.

This is a great flash multimedia presentation of World War II from the perspective of the Soviet Union. It has highlights of everything major that happened, and you clan click on different things to learn more about it or hear first-hand accounts. I would have to say that it is the best resource that I have seen on WWII on the internet. If you like learning about the war, take a look at this, it is very impressive.

Krispy Kreme: Unusual stock activity a mystery

Financial News - Yahoo! Finance (article)

The stock opened the day at $5.52, and by 11:30 a.m. had dropped to $4.05, a 26.6 percent plunge. Trading in the stock was also much heavier than usual Wednesday, with nearly 5.2 million shares having changed hands by 2 p.m., more than five times the average daily volume of 913,276 shares.
Krispy Kreme issued a news release saying it didn't know what was causing the unusual trading activity -- an unusual move for the company. Public companies tend not to comment on the trading activity in their stocks.

2-1 they go bankrupt.

After listing to a seminar from a guy from the finance dept. here at K-State, I am even more cynical about stocks. He basically said that insider trading happens all the time... and a bunch of people dropping stock means that the company is not doing good.

They’re out! Delphi files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy

Engadget (article)

Some may know Delphi as one of the major auto parts suppliers in the US, but of course we at Engadget know them first and foremost as the principal supplier of XM satellite radio receivers.

If you are looking for a satellite radio provider, it looks like Sirius might be the one to go for, since Delphi is one of XM's big players.

Mansion Impossible (Game)

This is a pretty spiffy, buy low, sell high, game. Worth a click or two.

Stupid

Need a reason to hate lawyers for today?

Andrea Levin is grateful that Broward County schools care about her daughter's safety. But this year when they posted a sign that demanded "no running" on the playground, it seemed like overkill.
"To say `no running' on the playground seems crazy," said Bartleman, who agreed to be interviewed on a recent outing at Everglades. "But your feelings change when you're in a closed-door meeting with lawyers."

How about instead of making school the solution to bad parenting and a place where kids can learn as long as they might not get hurt (either emotionally or physically), we make parents sign wavers so the school can't be sued for their kids mistakes.

Then if the parents don't want to let their kids live their lives they can home school them.

I am tired of stupid people.

Ludo update.

Ludo has recently released their second CD, and of what I have heard from it, it rocks. The song "Save Our City" is nothing short of a masterpiece (check it out here, click on the second song, although all the songs there are good.) The basic premise of the song is that zombies are attacking a city and a boy is begging the mayor of the city for help. If you do nothing else in the next 15 seconds you should click on the link and listen to the song.
No really.

K-State football

Well this is the kind of day it was:

(4th and 45)

Well, our offense was not very good, luckily our defense is very good. So we were still able to hold off KU.

That was KU going for it on 4th down to try to keep their last drive alive. We stopped them.

Well for some reason I am really tired today. I think I'll head off to bed.

Taco yeah.

What if all the tacos everywhere in the world decided to riot? There would be lettuce all over the streets because, as is always the case, the first thing to go when a taco moves is the lettuce, ...well... tomatoes would be right up there are well. So the streets would be covered in lettuce and tomatoes, not good. Assuming, *assuming*, we can beat the taco uprising, we will have quite a mess on our hands with all the lettuce around. I propose we release rabbits to clean up the streets, not jackrabbits mind you, I am talking about those freaking huge pet rabbits that just sit around all day. Now, why would I use big pet rabbits instead of jackrabbits? Well, I have a theory that rabbits are like gold fish, and if you give them a bigger cage they grow bigger... so if we let the rabbits run free eating all the veggies from the Taco Riot of Ought-five (as it would soon be called), they *should* grow big enough to ride, and hoo-rah, no more dependence on forgiven oil. (Although we would have to endure regular taco riots, but I am prepared to deal with that to stick it to the oil barons.)

...And that’s what happens when I write about the first thing that comes into my head. (And I thought I had nothing to post about ^_^)

What could possibly go wrong?

Manhattan Kansas Restaurant Reviews, Pirate Islands Wiki

Manhattan Kansas Restaurant Reviews (site)

Speaking of Ning, I quickly threw this site together this morning (in about 15 minutes), there are a couple of things that I want to change about it (like include the hours they are open). But yeah, it's fine for now.
So if you live in Manhattan (Ks), go add and rate restaurants... since there is no good rating service on the internet for our restaurants... until now. ^_^

Also I have started a Wiki for the Pirate Islands. If you are a member of the Pirate Islands you are free to go there and add anything you want. The password is the usual password for Pirate Islands stuff. (email me if you don't know it.)

Lastly the weather today rocks. (All cloudy, rainy, and cool)

Putfile - Final AirBattle (game)

It has been awhile since i have posted a game here... it's not my fault, I have not come across a good game recently, until this one.

In this game you basically build up your anti-air stuff and shoot down planes that are flying overhead.. it is a very easy/addictive game.
Have a go at it.

Anything But Joey show at PJ's

This post is long over due...

Last Friday Nicole, Jenette, Michelle and I went to the Anything But Joey show here at PJ's. (Amber went to it too, but she did 'go' with us...) After quite a long wait the rockin' began with a band called National Fire Theory:

View this clip on Vimeo

They weren't too bad, but nothing special...

Next up was The Famed:

View this clip on Vimeo

They rocked like a monkey eating a banana (which i believe is a good thing, according to Cambodian customary culture). If you notice at the end of the video clip the lights go out and the music stops, that’s because they blew a fuse..., it took them about 10 seconds of playing to do that. They rocked that hard. ^_^

Next up was Stuck on Broadway:

View this clip on Vimeo

Normally these guys are pretty good, but Drew was drunk by this time so he sang off key during many of the songs. They were good, but not as good as usual.

Last up was Anything But Joey:

View this clip on Vimeo

By this time Drew was quite drunk, so they had to stop between each song to let Drew drink some water, or find a guitar pick, or stumble around for a minute. Luckily Brian and Grobe are good enough on their own that even a slurring Drew couldn't mess up the songs... that much.

All in all it was a rocking good time, and you should have been there (if you weren’t).
