fspMusic

fspMusic (game)
Since your legs got all the attention somebody in Japan made a DDR style game for your fingers. The game play is easy; just use the arrow keys and the spacebar. You actually have to go pretty quick to make it past level 7 or so.
If you get good at it let me know, my best so far is 17,195 points.

Hurrah!

Today I got a rough-rough draft done for my masters report. It is no where close to being finished, but at least I have all the parts, and they all just need to be expanded and awesomized. But it is good news on the home front.

On the opposite note today is Mardi Gras. I will celebrate by protecting my brain cells instead of killing them. Tea to the rescue.

Microsoft Origami

There is starting to be some buzz about Origami on the internet. Basically it looks like a PSP but more than just a media platform. Or to put it another way it looks like it will be what I wanted the PSP to be. Take a look for yourself in this ad. (Keep on the look out for symbolism in it, i think there is a far amount of it)

I would pay $400 for something like that. I wonder how much anyone else would pay for it.

TriLinks

Tonypa - TriLinks (game)

All you have to do in TriLinks is connect all the same color x spots together. It sounds easy but it is quite hard. The trick comes in that you do not get to choose what color to connect next, and as soon as you connect all of one color you start drawing connections for the next color; this means that if you connected the last color set poorly you will over write the colors and disconnect them. It is quite difficult, and so quite fun. Tonypa yet again made a great game. (He (?) also made ShoOot)

p.s. since the site is flash, the link just takes you to the main page, to get to the game click on Games>TriLinks.

Catch Phrase of the (Yester-)Day

Yesterday I felt like crap. My throat was sore and I was very tired. So after my classes I took a nap in my office. While falling asleep I was pondering whether or not to cancel game night, since I felt so bad. I was woken up abruptly when Matt got back from Theory class. I sat up quickly and adjusted my glasses. The problem was I had taken off my glasses, so I ended up jamming my thumb really hard into my eye. That hurt.
So while I was writhing in pain (and trying not to look like I was in pain, so Matt wouldn't ask what was going on, because that was one of the stupidest things I did) I decided that game night was off. This leads me to a new catch phrase:

Thumb to the Eye

The phrase is alot like "The straw that broke the camel's back" but a bit more graphic.
An example of usage: I was going to leave after we got bad service, but getting the wrong order was just a thumb to the eye. So I left without paying.

Go, use frequently.

Starry Night Frosting

This is the coolest frosting job ever. It is amazing how well she was able to reproduce Van Gogh's Starry Night. (Better than what we can do.) It is just plain awesome!

p.s. If you like the cake, go comment on her blog, I was reading her post from yesterday and she had a really hard day.

Time out of mind

BBC News (article)

Mr Eagleman came up with a cunning device: the "perceptual chronometer", a wristwatch-like device which flicked blindingly fast between two LED screens.

Normally the flicker would be so fast Jesse could only see a blur. But if time slowed down for him, he might be able to discern the two different screens and read a random number on one of them.

"There's no way to fake this test," says Dr Eagleman, "because if time is not running more slowly, they can't see the sequence."

All Jesse had to do was jump, and read. As he ascended the 33ft metal cage no-one seemed to believe this curious experiment might work.

When Jesse landed, he noted he had seen "98". Dr Eagleman checked. In fact the number was 96. Not quite spot-on, but the two numbers look very similar on a digital screen.

Further jumps got similar results - all suggesting that time did seem to slow down for Jesse during the jump.

So time actually does slow down or speed up based on what you are doing. This is very interesting, because when I was in a car wreck it seems like I have about 10 seconds of memory, but I know it lasted maybe half a second. And now I know that time actually did last for that long.
Also, some times before I get a good chance on scoring a goal in hockey time slows down, so maybe the greatest sports players aren't the ones with the best physical abilities, but the ones that are able to slow time down the most during important events.
Do you have any other cases of time slowing down?

Peaks and valleys

kstatecollegian.com (article)

Remsbecker said many people are surprised to learn that K-State has a roller hockey club. He called his team "the best-kept secret on campus" and said his goal is to get the secret out.

The collegian ran an article on K-State Hockey today. I didn't know that they were going to do it, but apparently Jenette did since she is quoted a couple of times. The print edition has a good picture of Jerry in his K-State goalie pads, and I wish they would have posted the picture online as well.
If you want to get caught up with our team, follow the link.

Amazing.

Mexico, at war.

You know who we should be giving a hard time to? Mexico.
I had forgotten that they attacked America during World War I. Exhibit A:

From March-June 1916 the United States mounted an armed expedition to Mexico to quell raids initiated by prominent Mexican leader Pancho Villa into the U.S.
Allegedly sponsored by the German government Villa launched a raid into the State of Chihuahua on 11 January 1916, capturing and killing 19 U.S. citizens. This was followed on 9 March with a raid upon Columbus in New Mexico, killing 11 citizens.

(full story)

Why did Mexico attack us? Because Germany promised Mexico that if they would attack us that Germany would give Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona back to Mexico. (I have no idea how they would have pulled this off.)

We should use this against Mexico when we are working out trade deals.
We would be like "Well, this deal sounds good and all, but America is still not over Pancho Villa just yet. Maybe you should give us a break on those strawberry prices."

Also wouldn't it be funny if Mexico was still clandestinely at war with us and they are secretly infiltrating the US, and then gonna take us down from within...
oh wait.

Bikers drown out funeral protesters

Army Times (article)

Wearing leather chaps and vests covered in military patches, a band of motorcyclists rolls from one soldier's funeral to another in hopes their respectful cheers and revving engines will drown out the insults of protesters.

The motorcycle club members calling themselves Patriot Guard Riders are trying to shield mourners from cruel jeers by adherents of a tiny fundamentalist church who picket military funerals to reflect their belief that U.S. combat deaths are a sign God is punishing the United States for harboring homosexuals. Some protesters' signs said, "Thank God for IEDs," the improvised explosive devices, or homemade bombs, that kill many U.S. soldiers.

"The most important thing we can do is let families know that the nation cares," said Don Woodrick, the biker group's Kentucky captain. "When a total stranger gets on a motorcycle in the middle of winter and drives 300 miles to hold a flag, that makes a powerful statement."

Two Things.

First, wouldn't it be funny if somebody would always confuse the word ostrich with the word asparagus? Then they would argue that it is a myth that ostriches can run 30 m.p.h. because, in reality, ostrich is a fern.

Secondly, without looking it up: If north is 'up' which way does the Earth revolve around the sun, clockwise or counter-clockwise?

That's what I though about on the way to hockey tonight.

Is Vault Surge?

No, but close enough.

For game night Aaron picked up some Vault at Walgreen's* for us all to try. It was pretty close to what I remember Surge tasting like, but I think the orange juice in Vault gives it just a hint of bitterness that Surge didn't have... also I think Surge was less carbonated than Vault. But overall Vault is pretty good, much better than Mt. Dew, which I don't like that much. If you try Vault let me know what you think.

*Aaron sez: "Don't go to Walgreen's, they are stupid."

Houston eyes cameras at apartment complexes

seattlepi.com (article)

Houston's police chief on Wednesday proposed placing surveillance cameras in apartment complexes, downtown streets, shopping malls and even private homes to fight crime during a shortage of police officers.
"I know a lot of people are concerned about Big Brother, but my response to that is, if you are not doing anything wrong, why should you worry about it?" Chief Harold Hurtt told reporters Wednesday at a regular briefing.

Fantastic.
Isn't that what they said in 1984?

Thursday, February 16, 2006

For Aaron:

Super Mario Soundboard

Spider King Dreams

Currently I am in Union Station. Why am I here? Let me tell you a short story.

I was very tired this morning. At 8.30 it came time to go to Dr. Loughin's Bootstrapping class. I actually felt awake as class started, but about thirty minutes into the class I started to doze on and off. This isn't a good thing for two reasons, one because it is a PhD level class, so I really need to pay attention to understand what is going on. Secondly, I sit in the front row of the class, so I am sure that Dr. Loughin either knows that I was dozing off or thinks that I take a real long time to blink.
Anyways, my dozing got so bad that one time I started to dream the Dr. Loughin was the King of the Spiders and he was teaching us something, I can't remember what, but I remember him drawing a web like thing on the board. I don't think I was out of it for too long, but the idea of Dr. Loughin being the King of the Spiders was entertaining enough to keep me awake for the rest of the period.
So why am I in Union Station? To get coffee. I have another class soon and although the idea of dozing off to the point of altering reality is fun, I really think I should be awake for Data Mining... there is only three of us in the class, Dr. Wang might notice. (Although I would like to take a class that is taught by the Queen of Ants...)

LED Throwies are LEDs that have a battery and a magnet attached so that you can stick them anywhere that you could with a magnet. The above link has a step by step guide on how to make them, and below is a video of the Throwies in action.
It is funny how something so simple can be so cool.

Drug tax

Last night I watched a show about St. Valentine's Day Massacre. Actually it was about the mob gangs of Chicago, which lead to the St. Valentines Day Massacre. If you don't know much about this here is how it went:
Back in the day Chicago was a blossoming city. The city leaders were very willing to be corrupt and so organized crime found the city a nice place to live. After awhile the organized crime boiled down to two gangs, the North Side and the South Side, which were named for what part of the city they controlled. Now the gangs were a menace, but it just so happened that around this time America went dry and voted in prohibition. This was a boon for organized crime. Both sides bought breweries, which could still legally produce beer, but very very week beer. But since the city officials were easy to corrupt the breweries produced full strength beer, and now the price of beer had increased by 5 times, so this made the money flow into the gangs. Anyways a sour deal between the gangs happed when one sold a brewery to another, and then they paid off the police to raid it, which landed up a higher up in jail. The result was alot of high level killings which climaxed when some guys went into one of their rivals HQ and shot seven people dead. That's the story of St. Valentine's Day Massacre.

Well, while I was watching the show I got to thinking about drugs. Really the only reason the Chicago gangs got so big is because alcohol was illegal, so only illegal people could make it. Now what about marijuana today? I think that it is giving the modern gangs a fair amount of cash flow that is fueling all of their activities. If we would legalize marijuana we could place a heavy tax on it, and the government could make a fair amount of money on it. Wouldn't you think that that would work?

Makos is a cute game that is similar to Ztar2. If you are looking to waste a couple of minutes this is a good one.

To hockey and back.

Hockey went good this weekend. We won our first game of the year 4-1 and we played decent against SLU and Washington U. Sam was able to make it, which made it even better. Nicole has the day off today so I'll do stuff with her until I need to head off to school. Maybe I should just cancel class today...

(Lance, this upcoming weekend we do not have any games, but in two weekends we will be playing at KC, and in three weekends is regionals in St. Louis. It would be cool to have you come up if you could make it.)

Hockey, and Elway.

Another weekend, another hockey tournament. This will be our last weekend of regular season play, but we still will have hockey two of the next three weekends after this one. Although I like playing hockey it does take up alot of time. It'll be over soon enough and then I can concentrate on... school. (yippee!)
On the school front things are improving. I have started a rough outline for my master's report, and all the preliminary stat stuff is done. After I get a rough draft for my report done I will go back and do a couple things to try to improve the fantasy scoring system some. But I do not need to if I don't have the time, the scoring system I found is already better than Yahoo's and better than what we have used before for PIFF so I at least have something.

I will leave you with a video of John Elway playing Dance Dance Revolution:

Ok, it's not really him, it's me in an Elway jersey... but I think people get me and him mixed up alot.
Somebody is like: "Hello, how are you?"
And I am like: "Fine. Did you know that I won two Super Bowls back-to-back?"
And then they are like: "Really? That's cool that you did that."
And then I'm all: "No, you are thinking of John Elway, people confuse us all the time."
And they are all "???" up in my face.

Word.

This is why religion can be very, very evil:

Swimming in syrup is as easy as water

nature.com (article)

The age old question of: Is swimming in water faster than swimming in syrup, has been answered. (I didn't know that this was a timeless question...)

Cussler and Gettelfinger took more than 300 kilograms of guar gum, an edible thickening agent found in salad dressings, ice cream and shampoo, and dumped it into a 25-metre swimming pool, creating a gloopy liquid twice as thick as water. "It looked like snot," says Cussler.
The pair then asked 16 volunteers, a mix of both competitive and recreational swimmers, to swim in a regular pool and in the guar syrup. Whatever strokes they used, the swimmers' times differed by no more than 4%, with neither water nor syrup producing consistently faster times, the researchers report in the American Institute of Chemical Engineers Journal.

There you go, you can swim as fast in syrup as you can in water. Now, I know what everyone is thinking... What about lava? Can you swim in that as fast as water?

Parasites on the Brain

Parasites on the Brain (article)

Like cats?

Toxoplasma gondii may be the most prevalent human parasite. As many as 50% of humans worldwide, and up to 80% in urban areas, have been infected with it at some time in their lives.

There are some interesting studies showing striking behavior differences between rats that have been infected with Toxoplasma and those that haven't. Normal rats are very reactive to the smell of cat urine - an unsurprising survival instinct. If they encounter cat urine in their environment they have an extreme fear reaction, and they will avoid that spot thereafter. Rats infected with Toxoplasma don't do this. They have no fear reaction to the smell of cat pee; they don't avoid the areas where they smell it. In fact some of the studied rats preferentially returned to the sites where they had smelled the urine. It's hard to see how this could benefit the rat, but easy to see how it could benefit Toxoplasma, which could return to its preferred host to complete its life cycle if the rat gets eaten.

Oh yeah, it gets better.

E. Fuller Torrey of the Stanley Medical Research Institute has found evidence of some that may be more drastic. Toxoplasma is associated with damage to the brain's astrocytes - glial cells that function as an interface between neuronal and non-neuronal tissues. Astrocyte damage has also been associated with schizophrenia. Now add in that pregnant women with high levels of Toxoplasma antibodies are more likely to have children who later develop schizophrenia, and you have something to give most people pause.

Why do people like cats again?
But this does shed some light on why 'cat people' are the way they are.
Crazy.

Although, I should point out that this looks awfully similar to this, which i believe is older.

Pretty Pretty Bang Bang

Pretty Pretty Bang Bang (game)

I come bearing you a gift of another game. This one is twice as addictive as the previous one, and only has half the calories. The basic premise of the game is to make alot of explosions by clicking, and then all the red thingies around you will also explode causing a chain reaction. The one main catch is that you are working against the clock and every time you click you get a time penalty. It is a grade A time water.

Weekended

A quick recap of my weekend, in rhyme:

Saturday was good, we did play two games
but we lost them both, I know, how lame.

We tried our hardest, but it did not matter,
Scott's stick got slashed, it went *shatter*.

After our games we went to watch the River Otters,
They were okay but were far from Globe Trotters.

After the ice hockey we went in search of food,
Olive Garden was decided on, because of our mood.

On Sunday we played yet another two games,
But alas we lost those two too, in sort: for shame.

Then on quickly we left to get on getting home,
So we could watch the Super Bowl in Detriot's dome.

The Super Bowl was played and we all had a good time,
But now it is Monday, so I will end this short rhyme.

Some fine, fine Super Bowl cookies.

Last night's Gamenight activity was the annual frosting of the Super Bowl cookies (see last year's too). Nicole made the cookies, and the rest of us frosted them.

We called Jenette the cookie maestro... not really, but she *does* look like she is about to play the cookies in this picture.

We ended up with about 100 Steelers and Seahawks cookies, and for the most part they turned out fine. Why do we need 200 cookies for a party of about 10 people? It's because at our Super Bowl parties whenever a team scores everyone eats a cookie. This always sounds like a great idea at first, but by the end of the third quarter you hope that both the team's defenses start to step it up. (You would think we would learn after a few years that consuming around 15 cookies a person in a short time is not a good idea, yet we still make 'em... ah traditions.)

The two cookies in the middle of the picture were deemed to be the best frosting job for each team. Almost all of the Steelers cookies turned out good, but most of the Seahawks cookies look like they have a flying hammer on their helmet instead of a bird head... oh well.

Only two more days until Super Bowl XL!

That's right, Hot Dog Chili Sauce, but no it doesn't end there.
The first three ingredients are: Water (ok), crushed beans (ok), beef fat (gag). That is just disgusting. But to top it off; it is Kroger brand, so you aren't even getting the best beef fat that there is.

I challenge you to find a grosser food product than this.

Sam does Telefund

When I got back from hockey practice last Monday Sam had left this message for me:

He went through every possible outcome on the flow chart for K-State's Telefund. This is easily the best telephone message that i have got so far this year. It is going to stay on the machine for awhile.

Vegetarian Can't Bring Self To Eat IHOP's Funny Face Pancakes

The Onion (article)

For some reason I just don't like The Onion that much, it has something to do about purposely reading fake news... anyways this made me laugh because of a certain vegetarian sister of mine... I won't name names...

BREMERTON, WA—During breakfast at the International House of Pancakes Monday, vegetarian Erica Legrand said she could not eat her Funny Face pancakes. "Not with those big maraschino eyes staring up at me," Legrand said. Upon further questioning, Legrand explained that she did not want break her "never eat anything with a face" rule.

Oh noes! Now pancakes have faces too, what *can* vegetarians eat?

Meade makes move from working on the farm to in the courts

Garden City Telegram (article)
The Telegram yesterday had a short story about Andy's mom.

While some may have butterflies in their stomachs on the first day of work, Linda Mead said that she was excited on that day - it was the act of deciding to get back into the workforce that made her nervous. She said she questioned going back to work outside of the farm because she wasn't sure if she was employable after being out of the daily grind for so long.

When Andy and I were going to the Juco Linda also decided to take some classes. She always seemed to enjoy learning things and she was fun to have a class with. (She brought donuts for everyone!) I do believe that she is one of the coolest moms ever.
