NHL trying to generate more offense with expected rules changes

Kansas City Star (article)

According to league sources, the red line will be discounted (except for icing), and passes from blue line to blue line will be allowed. That should open up the game to more action with fewer offside penalties called.
Other things given tentative approval include the elimination of ties — a shootout after a period of overtime would be used.

Both changes would be a good move in my opinion. I think that opening up the game would generate more scoring chances, which is good. But the best change would be a shoot-out to eliminate ties. The kind of excitement that shootouts would bring is something that I think is too good for the NHL too pass up, especially when they are trying to rebuild its fan base.
