Would fewer counties be better for Kansas?

The Manhattan Mercury (article)

A very interesting article:

Political science professor Joe Aistrup and geography professors John Harrington and Shawn Hutchinson have drawn a map that consolidates 105 Kansas counties into 31.
"Right now it's pretty theoretical," Aistrup warned. He said the three wanted to study whether counties are still the best way to deliver services, and whether there are other ways to deliver those services more efficiently and effectively.
"Previous studies have shown consolidation doesn't always save money in the short run," he said. "But over the long term, the consolidated services can save money, so this is part of the reason we're studying this issue."

I think that this is a very interesting idea, although I am hesitant to completely abandon the current counties due to the level of precision of weather warnings, but in general, this is something fun to ponder.

I don't know about Kansas, but IL used to have bigger, more square counties than it does today.
